Early versions of Adapt It, those prior to version 3, saved their documents and knowledge base in a binary format; the document filenames had an .adt extension. Version 3 introduced the use of XML to save files and knowledge bases. These files have a filename extension of .xml. Version 3 still supported the binary *.adt format. Versions 4, 5, and 6 support only the loading and saving of *.xml document files.
If you are still using one of the early versions of Adapt and your document filenames end in .adt, you must convert them to XML format before they can be used by versions 4 or later.
To convert the files from .adt to .xml, do the following:
- Download and install Adapt It Regular, or Adapt It Unicode, 3.6.4 from http://adapt-it.org,
- Open Adapt It and make sure that the File menu command “Save Documents and KB as XML” is ticked.
- Then:
- Open each *.adt document
- Make a trivial change (such as changing the location of the phrase box), and
- Save the document. It will the be saved in XML format.
After that, you can download and install the latest Adapt It, or Adapt It Unicode, version over the top of the old 3.6.4 version, Once this is done, the old documents and knowledge base can be opened, worked with, and saved safely.
