This two-part tutorial will take you through the basic procedures for using Adapt It to adapt some source language text into another language, which we call the target language:

• The source language is the language you are going to adapt from – for this tutorial we will use a few verses from the Melanesian Tok Pisin translation of 1 John.
• The target language is the language you are going to adapt into – for this tutorial it will be English.

You do not need to understand Tok Pisin to be able to work successfully through this tutorial; you will be told what adaptations to make for each Tok Pisin word or phrase, or you can make arbitrary translations of your own if you wish.

Because second language speakers of English might be using this tutorial, some explanations might be more simple and basic than you would expect. Please be patient, others might not know computers as well as you do, or not be familiar with Windows operations that you already know very well.

Where to begin

This tutorial will assume you have not run Adapt It yet. If you have already run Adapt It and created a project, or even a document, you will probably want to skip the first part of the tutorial, and start by making a new project with the source language name “Tok Pisin”, and the target language name “English”; then create a new document – selecting the file “Tok Pisin fragment 1 John.txt”, and supply an output filename of your choice when prompted. Then jump to Part 2 and start following the instructions there.

If you have never used Adapt It, start at Part 1. We assume that Adapt It has been installed on your machine beforehand. If not, open the document “Adapt It Basics.doc” and follow the instructions at the beginning, to get the application ready for use. Then reopen the tutorial file and begin at Part 1.
