Adapt It

Adapt It is a software program that provides tools for translating either text or scripture from one language which you know, to another related language known to you or a coworker. No linguistic analysis is performed. Thus it can be an appropriate tool for native speakers who have no linguistic training. Technically speaking, it is in the category of "Memory Translation Software" that relies heavily on the innate abilities of bilingual speakers. Adapt It is a Machine Assisted Human Translation tool and is significantly different from traditional "Computer Assisted Related Language Adaptation" (CARLA) software. Adapt It WX

Adapt It WX and Adapt It WX Unicode are the latest versions of Adapt It built with the wxWidgets (WX) cross-platform programming framework. The cross-platform versions began at version numbers 4.x.x, and the much improved (refactored) Adapt It now begins with version 5.x.x.

On this site you can download installers for Windows and Macintosh. Versions for Linux are available from http://packages.sil.org/. There are two basic versions available for Windows systems: Regular (non-Unicode) and Unicode. Unless you have a special reason to use the non-Unicode version we recommend that you use the Unicode version along with Unicode fonts and Unicode data. The Regular version only runs on Windows 98 and above systems including XP and Vista/7. The Unicode version will only run on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista/7 systems, although for right-to-left scripts, one should have Windows XP or Vista/7. For Linux (Ubuntu) and Macintosh systems, only the Unicode version is available. Adapt It WX is open source software. Choose your interface language from within Adapt It.

The new WX versions have the ability to change interface languages without downloading a separate program for each langauge interface. The interfaces are available in English (the default), Tok Pisin (Papua New Guinea), French, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. Only Tok Pisin is fully "localized" in this release 4.0.x of the WX version. The interfaces for French, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian are only partially "localized" (meaning that some interface elements will still be displayed in English - until we are able to get translators to complete the localizations for the WX version).

Online Help is now available inside Adapt It.

The new WX versions have over 10MB of online (HTML) help which is accessible from Adapt It's Help menu.

Which installer should I use?

If your Internet connection permits, you should download the full installer, for either the Unicode or the Regular version (if you do not need Unicode). The full installers install the program, all documentation, online helps, and the localization files. The full installer is about 15MB in size. If you cannot handle a 15MB download, you can download the minimal installer, which will install the program itself, but will not include any documentation, nor will it include any localization files (it will only display an English interface without the localization files).

Windows MSI installers

The Windows MSI (below) are identical to the EXE installers above, except that they allow the installation of Adapt It for "All Users." Both installers are full version installers.
